CHOOSE THE JOB BEFORE THE LOOK

What do you need your fence to do?

Ideal Fence is a Kokomo fence company serving North Central Indiana. We help homeowners connect their reasons for building a fence with the materials, installation details and gates that make the plan work.

Backyard privacy and a quieter view

Start with the places you use most: a patio table, a deck, the kitchen window or a garden. A solid vinyl privacy fence screens through the panel, while wood offers stockade, board-on-board and other arrangements with different sightlines. Height and changes in ground level matter as much as the material. A fence does not necessarily block a view from an upstairs window, so explain exactly what you want screened.

A yard for dogs and children

A useful enclosure considers the entire boundary, including gates and the space underneath. Tell us whether your dog digs, climbs or squeezes through small openings. Consider where children play and how adults will enter and supervise the yard. Choose the height, picket or mesh spacing, latch location and bottom clearance together. A fence supports your household’s safety plan; its configuration and everyday use still matter.

Pool fencing and open views

An aluminum fence can define a pool area while keeping the landscaping in view. Other materials may be suitable depending on the complete barrier design. Pool planning includes the fence height, openings, climbable features, gates, latches and access from the house. Bring the pool layout into the conversation early, and confirm the requirements for the property before choosing a style.

Curb appeal, boundaries and access

A white picket fence, a natural wood boundary and a black aluminum fence each frame a home differently. Consider the view from the street as well as from inside the yard. An open fence can define the space without concealing the landscape. Think through the route for visitors, deliveries and lawn equipment, then place the gates where those routes actually occur.

PLAN THE OPENINGS FROM THE START

Fence gates for daily use and wider access

Plan where you will walk, what equipment needs to enter and how each gate will move before settling on the fence line. The opening, support posts, hardware and ground clearance work together. Review those details alongside the fence material and style.

Walk gates

A single gate connects the yard to everyday routes, such as the driveway, back door or trash storage. Allow room for the mower as well as people, and check the approach on both sides. Self-closing swing gates are available for aluminum and vinyl fences; discuss the appropriate latch and hardware for your use.

Double gates for equipment and vehicles

Two gate leaves provide a wider opening for a trailer, vehicle or larger mowing equipment. Measure what needs to pass through, including the approach and turning space. Discuss hinge selection, support posts and how the gates will be secured when open or closed.

Chain-link rolling gates

For a chain-link fence, a rolling gate can move along the fence line where a swinging gate would need more clearance. The layout still needs enough room beside the opening for the gate to travel. Review grade and obstacles with the team before selecting it.

Pool safety gates

Ideal installs pool safety gates for aluminum and vinyl fences. Discuss self-closing and self-latching hardware, latch placement and the complete barrier requirements for your address. Confirm the design with the responsible authority before installation.

Compare the whole fence installation.

A material sample tells you about appearance. Your proposal should also describe the fence line, height, post system, gates and work needed to prepare the site. Those details explain why two fence installation estimates can differ even when the material names match.

Length and corners determine how the layout is divided into sections. Grade changes affect panel placement and the gap below the fence. A wide equipment gate needs its own support and clearance plan. Existing fences, landscaping and restricted access can also affect the work.

Ask your fencing contractor to identify what is included in the written scope. Compare removal and disposal, finish choices, gate hardware, installation timing and the applicable warranty. That gives you a clearer decision than a price per foot on its own.

See what supports the finished fence.

At the Kokomo vinyl installation documented on our Why Ideal page, heavy-wall galvanized steel posts were driven four feet into the ground. Brackets connected the components before white vinyl sleeves concealed the steel. The photos let you see the construction beneath the finished panels.

Use that example to start a conversation about your own foundation and gate supports. The chosen product, property and installation plan determine the details for your fence. Materials and workmanship have separate warranty terms worth reviewing before the project begins.

Questions about choosing a fence

What is the best fence material for my yard?

The best fit depends on your priorities. Compare wood and vinyl for privacy, aluminum for an open ornamental appearance, and chain-link for an open enclosure. Then compare the specific design, upkeep, gate needs and installed cost. Two styles made from the same material may behave very differently in your layout.

Which fences need less maintenance?

Vinyl, aluminum and coated chain-link do not have the same staining routine as wood. They still need suitable cleaning and periodic checks of posts, panels and gate hardware. Wood allows a natural appearance and finish choices, with a care plan for exposure to sun and moisture. Lower maintenance does not mean no maintenance.

Can different fence styles work on one property?

Discuss where screening is needed and where you want an open view. A layout may have different priorities along the street, patio and rear boundary. Transitions, height changes, gates and any approval requirements need to be resolved as one plan. Confirm the products and connections before assuming separate styles can simply be joined.

Can I get an estimate before choosing a material?

Yes. Bring your goals and ask to compare practical options for the same layout. A rough sketch, photos and a list of gate openings help make those comparisons useful. The Fence Decision Guide can organize your preferences, while an appointment lets you discuss questions with the team.
